The View From Hispaniola

From the distance we could see the boats,
so much like our boats but with mis-shapen sails,
the Spanish flag waving from the crow’s nest,
the long black cannons and the thirsty sailors,
the soldiers emerging from the bowels to come ashore,
the planting of the flag, first, then the Cross,
the kissing of the sandy soil,
the cheering of their chief as he addressed them,
the unloading of food,
the starting to build shelters.

At last, after all these centuries,
our messages must have gotten through,
our invitation to the unknown white men
to come and share our paradise.

At last they can be silenced,
all those who doubted
there was human life beyond these shores.

At last, at last,
we have discovered Europe.
